John O’Connor is a multi-platform journalist and producer for multiple newsrooms in Columbia, Missouri. Currently, John works part-time writing, producing, and anchoring his own stories at Newsy.com, an award-winning mobile video news platform. He has also worked at the local NBC affiliate television station KOMU 8 News. During his time at KOMU, John worked on the noon U_News broadcast, which is the first newscast to use Google+ to speak live with reporters and viewers from across the world in real time.
John is a senior student at the University of Missouri School of Journalism where he studies Convergence and International Journalism and serves as a teaching assistant for the department. At the University of Missouri he also studies video production and graphic design while working towards his minor in Information Technology.
John is a dedicated member of the University of Missouri Society of Professional Journalists Chapter, where he currently serves as Vice President and Treasurer. He also has served as a Digital Media executive at SPJ, and still works closely with the committee managing the chapter's social media sites. John recruits professional journalists and prominent Missouri journalism faculty for organized events to help inform and train budding journalists at the university.
